The award was announced at the 25th Ceremony of the World Travel Awards - considered the most important tourism awards in the world - and thus reinforces the country's outstanding position in world tourism, as it is the second time it is awarded. The Conrad Hotel was also voted as the best luxury leisure resort. Last year, Portugal had already won this prize and was the first European country to win it after defeating competitors such as Brazil, Greece, Maldives, USA, Morocco, Vietnam or Spain. The prize is the result of the vote of the general public, in particular the one that is made by 200 thousand professionals of the tourism industry, representatives of 160 countries. The World Travel Awards were created in 1993 to distinguish 'the best examples of good practice in the tourism sector on a global scale' and 'in order to stimulate the competitiveness and quality of tourism'.
