OPORTO TOUR - ALL DAY

"There in the loyal city, where originated (as is fame) the eternal name of Portugal (...)"

Luís Vaz de Camões, in “Lusíadas”

The city of Oporto, separated from Gaia by the Douro river, where the famous wine is aged, which gave its name, is the second largest city in Portugal. Its ancient roots preserved with pride despite time, with a prosperous commerce and effectively transform it into a modern and traditional city almost simultaneously, with its old neighborhoods, not forgetting the fascinating Ribeira neighborhood with its alleys, typical houses and picturesque population full of restaurants and bars. Perhaps it is its elegant neighborhoods and manor villages that oppose the narrow and ancient streets that UNESCO declared a World Heritage Site.

Tour highlights

  • FOZ/CASTELO DO QUEIJO (FOZ/CHEESE CASTLE)

It is a privileged place where the Douro River meets the Atlantic Ocean, allows beautiful landscapes, embellished with its promenade, beautiful and cosmopolitan esplanades, bars and gardens, being a busy place day and night.

The Castle of the Cheese or Castle of São Francisco Xavier, built in the 15th century, is a small defensive fortification, located in Praça Gonçalves Zarco.

The fort was named after the rocks on which it was made to look like pieces of cheese.

  • CENTRO HISTÓRICO (HISTORIC CENTRE)
A place of great aesthetic value, it presents an urban fabric and numerous historical buildings that have witnessed its development for more than a thousand years. The masterpiece of human creativity, in the harmonious articulation of the streets with the surrounding space and especially with the Douro river and Vila Nova de Gaia, presents a visual unit that attributes one of its most important aspects, the panoramic aspect.
  • IGREJA DE SÃO FRANCISCO (SÃO FRANCISCO CHURCH)
The Church of San Francisco was built in the 14th century, during the reign of D. Fernando, in place of a modest temple belonging to the order of the Franciscans that had settled in the city of Oporto in 1223.
  • RIBEIRA DO PORTO
Considered one of the oldest squares, mentioned already in 1389, it has medieval origin. Place with an intense commerce, with tents of sale and fish auction. It is an indispensable place to visit, with many spaces for nightlife.
  • SÉ/ CATEDRAL DO PORTO (CATHEDRAL OF OPORTO)

The Oporto’s Cathedral, located in the heart of the historical center of the city, is one of the main and oldest monuments of Portugal.

The building has Roman-Gothic structure and began to be built in the 12th century, being finished in the 13th century.

  • ESTAÇÃO DE SÃO BENTO (SÃO BENTO STATION)

  • It was built at the beginning of the 20th century in the exact location where the Convent of São Bento de Avé–Maria existed, with glass and cast iron cover, by the architect Marques da Silva. The atrium is covered with twenty thousand historical tiles, by the painter Jorge Colaço, which illustrate the evolution of transport and scenes of Portuguese history and life

  • AVENIDA DOS ALIADOS

  • The imposing architecture and its central character make this avenue the "living room" of the city, being the place par excellence where the people of Oporto concentrate to celebrate special moments. The buildings are in granite, many of them crowned with lantern-light, domes and spires. Marked by a wide central plate completely cobbled by granite cobblestones, where statues come alive and where the Mirror of Water deserves prominence. You will find in its north top the building of the Town Hall.

  • TORRE DOS CLÉRIGOS

  • Baroque work, by Nicolau Nasoni, built in the first half of the 18th century. The Tower is one of the most emblematic monuments of the city of Oporto. The panoramic view over the city and the Douro river, which is reached from the top of the Tower, is well worth the effort to climb the staircase with about 240 steps. Taking advantage of the recent works of renovation and reconversion of one of the most prestigious buildings in the city of Oporto, supported by a project that soon solved the accessibility constraints of the complex, it was installed of a multisensory perception station that simulated the experience of ascent to the Clérigos Tower, accessible and available to all visitors. Within the Clérigos building you will find some of the Collection of the Brotherhood and the Collection of the Christus, where you can make a trip through time and space, where art and religion complement each other.
